The importance of Vitamin D for the dancer

It’s pretty standard that a sunny day brings out a good mood in all. I just love opening the curtains wide and letting the sun’s rays flood the house and jump at the chance of visiting the beach in some shorts to catch some colour. Well it turns out that the sunshine isn’t just good for our moods, but also building a healthy body…

With limited hours being spent in natural sunlight due to many hours being spent inside from classes or rehearsal, dancers are at a greater risk of Vitamin D deficiency. A 2013 study by Wyon et al. found dancers to have insufficient levels of vitamin D, especially within the winter months.

Vitamin D is a vital nutrient for maintaining strong bones and helping the body to absorb calcium. Calcium is vital for growth, immune function, blood pressure, muscle mass and strength. So it is no coincidence that research has found vitamin D supplementation to be beneficial in increasing vertical jump height and isometric muscle strength, whilst also reducing injury rates within elite ballet dancers.

It is believed that due to the high levels of stress which is placed on dancer’s bones and muscles, a vitamin d deficiency can cause greater harm on their bodies, than others who train at a less intensive level. A stress fracture is a common injury within the dancing population, and although it may be caused by poor programming, technical or biomechanical factors, it could also be linked to a vitamin D deficiency.

Dr Wolman (National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science) recommends that dancers need about 1000 IU of vitamin D3 a day, however for the deficient dancer higher levels may be needed. If you are worried about your Vitamin D levels, contact your Dr who can perform a simple blood test to calculate your levels.

Vitamin D can be found in natural sources of food such as salmon, tuna, eggs, cheese and milk. You might, therefore wish to contact a registered dietician who can advise you further.

International Dance Day

As it is International Dance Day I thought I would share my favourite photos from recent shoot with Chris Rennison Rae.

On a freezing cold morning in March, we travelled to different locations along the North East coast to catch the sunrise and still spring morning. Here are the results…

Thankfully Chris chose a much warmer location for the following shoot which took place at the Grand Hotel in Tynemouth. I think this has been my favourite shoot yet! Take a look and see what you think!

Let me know what you think!

Ballet Inspired Photo Shoot

Towards the end of November I was lucky to once again work with the wonderful Chris Rennison-Rea. This time the shoot had more of a ballet theme, along with a few other ideas we fancied trying.
The location of the shoot was the Yoga Station in Whitely Bay Metro station. It was perfect for the shoots theme due to its beautiful wooden floors and vast space. In total we spent around 4 hours setting up, shooting, changing outfits and making sure the lighting was perfect.
I’m not sure which shoot with Chris I have preferred as each had a different feel. The photos from each are completely different and each were equally fun to do. In 2016 I shall be working with Chris again in the city of Newcastle and I can’t wait to see the results of those.

Take a look at the photos below and see what you think.

First Shoot

Early morning on the 8th October I joined Chris Rennison-Rae, a local North-East photographer at Cullercoats Bay, Whitley Bay. It was a surprisingly pleasant morning considering we on a Northern beach with the sun yet to come up. We were there to shoot some fitness photos in the setting of a beautiful autumnal sunrise.
Chris of Rennison-Rae Photography is based in Newcastle and is a master of varied areas of photography such as weddings, portraits and modelling shots. Take a look at his website here for more information - http://www.rennisonraephotography.com/home.html.
We had a great morning shooting in the bay, which houses varied settings, from two piers, to golden sand, rocks, and a grungy underpass. The aim of the shoot was to capture the beauty of the light from the morning sun, and in this stillness perform early morning yoga, then using the water, show the reflective nature of solitary exercise. Following this we moved to the underpass to achieve an edgy urban feel, contrasting the sharp lines of the environment with some delicate yet fierce dance like poses. Have a look at the photos below and decide for yourself whether we captured it!

It was great fun working with Chris who was hilarious and made me feel at ease during my first real photo shoot. I am looking forward to working with him again next month, this time in a studio, where the focus is on dance – exciting!!
